Marigold: Offensive grade-B Hollywood actress (“I don’t do ‘thankful’ extremely well,” she admits) goes to India to make a film, only to find that the production has fallen aside. Before long she’s employed to partake in a Bollywood film, and a reciprocal enchantment grows between her and the handsome choreographer. Cast includes Ali Larter, Salman Khan, Nandana Sen, Ian Bohen, Helen Khan, Suchitra Pillai, and Shari Watson. (112 minutes, 2007)
The Plough and the Stars: Boring, theatrical filmizations of Sean O’Casey’s play with Foster as Irish revolutionary leader and Stanwyck as long-agonizing spouse who prays for his life. Cast includes Barbara Stanwyck, Preston Foster, Barry Fitzgerald, Una O’Connor, Bonita Granville, and Arthur Guards. (78 minutes, 1936)
Cry the Beloved Country: Moving redo of the 1951 film based on Alan Paton’s rejoiced novel, in reference to a backwoods pastor (Jones) who, in 1946, makes his first ever trip to the city of Johannesburg in search of his errant child. At the same time prosperous landowner Harris voyages there to claim the body of his child, who has just been killed. We see phenomenal work by Jones, Harris, and a largely foreign cast. Not as understated as the first making, however powerful in its own way. Cast includes Richard Harris, James Earl Jones, Charles S. Dutton, and Vusi Kunene. (120 minutes, 1995)
Hoosiers: Hackman gets a last chance job coaching a very small Indiana high school basketball team in the 1950s, and faces the duel tests of bringing the team to the state final and personal redemption. This story is loosly based on an actual team from a small town in Indiana that played for the state title. Cast includes Gene Hackman, Barbara Hershey, Dennis Hopper, Sheb Wooley, Fern Parsons, Brad Boyle, Steve Hollar, Brad Long, and David Neidorf. (114 minutes, 1986)
After the Rehearsal: Fuller returned to filmmaking after a long hiatus with this lucid, autobiographical account of a particular infantly battalion and its courageous sergeant throughout WW2. Difficult to trust one film might bundle so much into its narrative, an opulent, moving, practical, and poetic film. Carradine depicts and plays Fuller’s doppelganger, complete with cigar. Cast includes Erland Josephson, Ingrid Thulin, Lena Olin, Nadja PaJrnstjema-Weiss, and Bertil Guve. (112 minutes, 1984)
Borderline: Abnormal thriller comedy in which L.A. cop Trevor tries to assemble proof contrary to cunning drug smuggler Burr when mixing with hard gentleman MacMurray in Mexico. Starts out promisingly, although eventually slows down in silliness. Burr makes a lucid scoundrel.Tet Cast includes Fred MacMurray, Claire Trevor, Raymond Burr, Jose Torvay, Morris Ankrum, and Roy Roberts. (88 minutes, 1950)
The Last Seduction: Pathologically malevolent and stunningly sensual female ditches her spouse, snatches the money he’s made in a drug deal, and escapes N.Y.C. to a tiny upstate town where she allures and bewilders a local gentleman who becomes her latest patsy. Fiorentino’s spicy femme fatale makes Stanwyck in Triple Indemnity look like Snow White! The movie is a scorching, seductive thriller from contemporary film noir master Dahl and author Steve Barancik. Cast includes Linda Fiorentino, Peter Berg, J. T. Walsh, Bill Nunn, Bill Pullman, Michael Raysses, and Zach Phifer. (110 minutes, 1994)
