The Thief of Paris: Intense comedy-drama with personal problems turning Belmondo to thievery for reprisal against the world. Eventually he finds that robbery has become his entire life. Cast includes Jean-Paul Belmondo, Genevieve Bujold, Marie Dubois, Francoise Fabian, and Julien Guiomar. (119 minutes, 1967)

Soapdish: Farcical comedy in reference to a soap opera monarch who’s trailing her clutch–on the show, and her life. Field and Kline are a treat to watch playing larger than life characters, however Whoopi is trashed, Downey is miscast, and the script (by Robert Harling and Andrew Bergman) imagines “anxious” equals “funny.” Cast includes Sally Field, Kevin Kline, Robert Downey, Jr., Cathy Moriarty, Whoopi Goldberg, Elisabeth Shue, Carrie Fisher, Garry Marshall, Teri Hatcher, Paul Johansson, Costas Mandylor, Stephen Nichols, Kathy Najimy, and Ben Stein. (95 minutes, 1991)

Bootmen: Novice director Perry (of the dance group Tap Mutts) used his own background to develop this toe tapping film of a youthful gentleman’s escape into big-time show business- and then back once more as he rallies his blue collar tap-dancing cronies to build his own modern-day dance show. Cast includes Adam Garcia, Sam Worthington, Sophie Lee, Christopher Horsey, Lee McDonald, William Zappa, and Richard Carter. (93 minutes, 2000)

Frozen Assets: Low-octane joke trifle, in which Bernsen is moved to a new bank olnly to find it’s a sperm bank (get it?). He meets censored biologist Long and after a lot of strength wisecracks they find that they are drawn to each other. Cast includes Shelley Long, Corbin Bernsen, Larry Miller, Dody Goodman, Matt Clark, Paul Sand, Teri Copley, Gloria Camden, and Gerrit Graham. (96 minutes, 1992)

Doughboys: This is one of Buster’s poorest films, a tiresome Army comedy. Rude sergeant Brophy overrides the few laughs. Cast includes Buster Keaton, Sally Eilers, Cliff Edwards, and Edward Brophy. (79 minutes, 1930)

Singles: Life in the Seattle dating scene ain’t simple. Energetic seriocomedy with some appealing performances (particularly by-Scott and Sedgwick), however by no means as enlightening as you wish it can be. Film has music, setting, and fashion galore, although additionally a rather choppy script. Cast includes Bridget Fonda, Matt Dillon, Campbell Scott, Kyra Sedgwick, Sheila Kelley, Jim Real, Bill Pullman, James Le Gros, Devon Raymond, Camllo Gallardo, Friend Stroller, Jeremy Piven, Paul Giamatti, and Tim Burton. The Search for One-Eyed Jimmy: Oddball tale of a documentary fiImmaker, just out of college, who returns to his old Brooklyn community and finds cinematic encouragement as his camcorder follows the track of a missing local low life. Cast includes Samuel L. Jackson, Steve Buscemi, Michael Badalucco, Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Anne Meara, Jennifer Beals, Nicholas Turturro, Aida Turturro, Holt McCaIIany, Sam Rockwell, and Tony Sirico. (82 minutes, 1996)

The Education of Sonny Carson: Fascinating if overemotional drama of disobedient black youth in Brooklyn of the ’50s and ’60s. Based on Carson’s autobiography, the film takes on extra meaning with consideration to his notoriety on the N.Y.C scene. Cast includes Rony Familyton, Don Gordon, Joyce Stroller, and Paul Benjamin. (105 minutes, 1974)

Rambo: First Blood Part: Comic magazine action myth of one-man army who goes to Cambodia looking for American MIAs and finds he’s been duped by Uncle Sam. By no means uninteresting although remarkably dumb; if one were to take it critically, it could be considered pretty weak, as it capitalizes on genuine-life frustrations of MIA families and Vietnam vets. Cast includes Sylvester Stallone, Richard Crenna, Charles Napier, Julia Nickson, Steven Berkoff, and Martin Kove. (95 minutes, 1985)
